Dr. Reeves, outspoken Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, returned to the city Sept 10 after 5-month?

  • Description

Dr. Reeves, outspoken Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, returned to the city Sept 10 after 5-month stay in Britain. The anti-Apartheid Bishop left South Africa - threatened with arrest - when the state of emergency was declared following the shootings in Sharpeville last March.

At the airport, the Bishop declared: "My immediate plans are to carry on with my work, both political and spiritual. I do not see any clear distinction between the two." There was some booing as the Bishop walked up the tarmac, but later, as he was warmly greeted by clergymen in the airport terminal, members of his diocese and Liberal Party officials sang "For he's a jolly good fellow."
Reports from Johannesburg Sept 12 state Dr Reeves was deported secretly by air. A police car drove him to Johannesburg Airport, where he was put aboard an aircraft waiting in a hangar, and flown to Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. He is expected to arrive in London Sept 13.
