    CONGO-KINSHASA'S MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, M. JEAN-JOSEPH LITHO, RECENTLY VISITED THE STATE-OWNED NDJILI POULTRY FARM. HIS VISIT WAS CONNECTED WITH THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS AIMED AT MAKING THE COUNTRY SELF-SUFFICIENT IN FOOD.

    CONGO-KINSHASA'S HIGH COMMISSION FOR PLANNING AND NATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION IS EXPECTED TO SPEND NEARLY GBP8,000,000 STERLING IN PREPARATIONS FOR A FIVE-YEAR PLAN LAUNCHED THIS MONTH (JANUARY), THIS INCLUDES THE PLANNING OF AN AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMME AIMED AT STEPPING UP FARM EXPORTS TO PRE-INDEPENDENCE LEVEL.

    YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN KINSHASA, M. PAUL MARC HENRY, JOINT ADMINISTRATOR OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, SAID UNITED NATIONS HELP WOULD BE FORTHCOMING FOR THE CONGO-KINSHASA AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMME.

    M. HENRY SAID HE CONSIDERED SECURITY CONDITIONS IN THE CONGO WERE SUFFICIENTLY RESTORED FOR A PROGRAMME OF REVIVING AGRICULTURE TO HAVE A CHANCE OF SUCCESS. HE TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE THAT IT WAS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR THE CONGO TO FEED ITSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

    PREPARATIONS FOR THE PROGRAMME INCLUDE THE RECRUITMENT OF 250 AGRICULTURALISTS AND SURGEONS AND 3,500 TECHNICIANS TO WORK IN THE CONGO-KINSHASA'S EIGHT PROVINCES.

    M. LITHO SAID HE HAD BEEN IMPRESSED BY THE FOWL-BREEDING TECHNIQUES AND PRODUCTION OF FOOD FOR POULTRY AT THE NDJILI FARM.
