Expo-70...where some 7,000 people attended the Republic of Gabon's National Day celebrations on Friday (June 12). The Japanese representative to Expo-70, Mr Toru Haguiwara, and the Gabonese Foreign Minister, Monsieur Jean-Remy Ayoune, accompanied by his wife, were also present at the celebrations.
The flags of both Gabon and Japan were raised while both countries' national anthems were played, after which Monsieur Ayoune addressed the crowd assembled at Festival Plaza. He said that the theme of Expo -- "Human progress and harmony" -- was one which the people of Gabon found inspiring, and that the assembly of so many nations at Expo-70 would help to promote understanding and brotherhood among men.
After Monsieur Ayoune's speech, 30 groups from Kansai University, Osaka, displayed model exercises of Karate -- the traditional Oriental art of defence without weapons.
Later, more than 1,000 pupils of the Kishiwada City Primary School performed marching displays.
After the celebrations, Monsieur and Madame Ayoune, together with Mr Toru Haguiwara and the Vice-Chairman of the Expo 70 Association, Mr Kanno and his wife, visited the Gabon pavilion, which is situated among other African and Asian pavilions
