REPORTER: "At State Police Headquarters in Joliet, Illinois, the makers and installers of bullet-proof composites demonstrated their wares. Their audience was police officials from a number of Illinois communities where bank security is a major concern. A police marksmen fired a variety of weapons, from a .38 revolver, often used in armed robberies, to a .44 magnum, the most powerful hand gun in non-military use. On the right, standard bullet-proof glass nearly an inch and a half thick; on the left, an acrylic compound; and in the centre a petro-chemical compound sold commercially under the name Lexguard. As it turns out, the bullet-proof glass isn't so bullet-proof after all. The .38 bullet is coming straight at the camera. Even the stronger acrylic compound was on match for the .44 magnum slugs. But the Lexguard stopped them cold. The lessons for bank designers are graphically clear; tellers in drive-in booths are not safe behind their bullet-proof glass unless it's made of something a lot stronger than glass."
