  • Description

A FOUR-MAN NAGA DELEGATION SEEKING INDEPENDENCE FOR THEIR MOUNTAIN HOMELAND CONFERRED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WITH INDIA'S PRIME MINISTER, MRS INDIRA GANDHI, FOR THE SECOND ROUND OF CRUCIAL TALKS ON NAGALAND'S FUTURE.

A STATEMENT AFTER THE TALKS SAID POLITICAL ISSUES WERE AVOIDED AND DISCUSSION CENTRED ON VIOLATIONS OF THE 21-MONTH-OLD CEASE-FIRE THAT ENDED 10 YEARS OF FIGHTING BETWEEN THE NAGAS AND INDIAN TROOPS IN THE FOREST-COVERED MOUNTAINS ON INDIA'S FRONTIER WITH BURMA.

THE CEASE-FIRE WAS ARRANGED BY A THREE-MAN PEACE MISSION, COMPRISING THE CHIEF MINISTER OF ASSAM STATE, MR. B.P. CHALIHA, THE REVEREND MICHAEL SCOTT, BRITISH CLERGYMAN ACTIVE IN PEACE MOVEMENTS, AND THE GANDHIAN SOCIALIST LEADER, MR JAYAPRAKASH NARAYAN, WHO HAS SINCE RESIGNED. MR CHALIHA AND MR SCOTT WERE PRESENT AS OBSERVERS AT THE TALKS BETWEEN MRS GANDHI AND THE DELEGATION. LEADING THE DELEGATION WAS MR KUGHATO SUKHAI.

(INDIA OPPOSES THE CLAIM TO COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE BEING PRESSED BY NAGA TRIBAL UNDERGROUND LEADERS. ANY SOLUTION TO THE 12-YEAR-OLD PROBLEM MUST BE SOLVED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF INDIAN UNION, THE GOVERNMENT STATES.)
