    A SPECIAL ANTI-CORRUPTION COURT IN SAIGON YESTERDAY (MONDAY) SENTENCED ONE OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S BIGGEST BUSINESSMEN TO DEATH FOR WAR-PROFITEERING.

    COMPANY MANAGING DIRECTOR, MR TA VINH WAS FOUND GUILTY OF COMMODITY HOARDING, SPECULATION AND BRIBING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH. TA VINH, WHO DENIED THE CHARGES, HAS 24 HOURS IN WHICH TO APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY TO THE HEAD OF STATE, LIEUTENANT GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU. THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN CAO KY, WHO ATTENDED THE TRIAL ACCOMPANIED BY DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN HUU CO, HAS SAID THAT THOSE FOUND GUILTY OF PROFITEERING WILL BE SHOT AND NAN EXECUTION YARD HAS ALREADY BEEN PREPARED NEAR THE COURT.

    THE CASE WAS THE FIRST TO BE TRIED BY A SPECIAL COURT SET UP BY THE GOVERNMENT TO RAM HOME ITS CAMPAIGN AGAINST CORRUPTION CAUSED BY THE WAR IN VIETNAM. TODAY (TUESDAY) TWO MORE BUSINESSMEN WERE EACH SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR PROFITEERING. ALL THEIR BUSINESS ASSETS WILL BE CONFISCATED AND HANDED OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT.
