  • Description

World Heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman knocked out Puerto Rican challenger Joe King Roman in the first round of their title fight in Tokyo's Korakuen Stadium on Saturday (September 1).

But the two minute knockout immediately led to protests. Roman's manger Bill Daly accused the world champion of hitting while his opponent was down and said he was lodging an official protest against referee Jay Edson's refusal to disqualify Foreman.

The 25-year-old ninth-ranked Roman was knocked down twice and counted out without having a chance to land a single telling blow.

He went down in the first minute to what looked like a right hook to the side of the face but claimed later he had been pushed. As Roman sat on the right floor, Foreman hit him with another hard right. The referee did not count it as a knockdown and allowed Roman several seconds to recover. But he was on the canvas again soon after.

At the weigh-in on Friday (August 31), Foreman was first on the scales to record 219 1/4 lbs (99.45 kgs) and Roman weighed 196 3/4 lbs (89.43 kgs).

Foreman was repeatedly booed by the Japanese crowd many of whom had paid up to GBP 77 sterling (189 US dollars) for ringside seats.

SYNOPSIS: In Tokyo of Friday, world heavyweight champion George Foreman weighs-in for his four hundred thousand pound fight against Puerto Rican Challenger Joe King.

It was the first heavyweight title fight ever to be held in Japan -and the Japanese paid up to seventy pounds for ringside seats.

The experts said Roman, ranked ninth in the world, would not last against Foreman's powerful blows.

And in Saturday's fight, that was the way ti turned out. Foreman won the four hundred thousand in one round when Roman was counted out after two minutes.

But Roman's manager Bill Daly immediately protested that Foreman had hit when his opponent was down.

An official protest is to be lodged with the Japan Boxing Commission.

Foreman said if the punch was judged illegal he would fight Roman again. But after the one sided contest, Foreman is still world heavyweight champion.
