  • Description

AN ARAB GUERILLA, WOUNDED DURING A CLASH WITH ISRAELI FORCES NEAR JERICHO ON SATURDAY (22 JUNE) WAS, ON SUNDAY (23 JUNE) UNDER CLOSE GUARD AT THE HADASSAH HOSPITAL, BIN KAREM. THE GUERILLAS WAS ONE OF TWELVE WHO HAD FOUGHT A RUNNING BATTLE WITH AN ISRAELI PATROL, IN A BANANA PLANTATION ABOUT TWO MILES (3 KMS) NORTH OF JERICHO. HIS ELEVEN COMPANIONS WERE KILLED IN THE ACTION. ONE ISRAELI SOLDIER WAS ALSO KILLED.

AT THE HOSPITAL, THE WOUNDED GUERRILLA RECEIVED THE SAME TREATMENT AS ANY WOUNDED ISRAELI SOLDIER. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS THAT, IN THIS MAN'S CASE, A 24 HOUR MILITARY GUARD WAS PLACED ON HIS BED. DOCTORS REMOVED A BULLET FROM THE MAN'S LEG AND WRAPPED THE LEG IN A PLASTER CAST.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS LATER, THE PRISONER WAS WHEELED OUT OF THE HOSPITAL IN A WHEELCHAIR AND TRANSFERRED TO A JEEP. HE WAS THEN DRIVEN AWAY FOR INTERROGATION.

DURING HIS HOSPITALISATION, THE GUERRILLAS TOLD THE AUTHORITIES THAT HE HAD BEEN TRAINED IN SYRIA AND THEN TRANSFERRED TO JORDAN. HE CONFIRMED THAT HIS PARTY HAD CONSISTED OF TWELVE MEN AND THAT NONE HAD ESCAPED FROM ISRAELI TERRITORY.
