    Golfers from 50 countries are taking part in the 25th World Cup tournament which began on Thursday (8 December) at the Wack-Wack Golf Club near Manila in the Philippines. At the end of the first day's play the Canadian pair George Knudson and Dave Barr were leading the field in the team event. Gary Player was in front in the individual championships, with the winner of the United States Open, Hubert Green, one stroke behind.

    SYNOPSIS: President Ferdinand Marcos drove the first ball to mark the start of the tournament.

    Severian Ballesteros of Spain tees off. He and his partner finished fifth after the first day's play.

    With the United States Open already to his credit, Hubert Green was a favourite for the individual title. He finished the first round of the day with 69.

    Gary Player turned in the best score with a second round of 68.

    Kim Seung Hack of South Korea was one of a strong continent of Asian players.

    Green finished the first round three under par. At that point he appeared well ahead of Player who had to wait for the second round in the afternoon to take a one-stroke lead.

    George Knudson of Canada, a veteran of nine World Cup competitions, and a winner of the individual title in 1966, ended the day well clear in the team event, four strokes ahead. With his team mate Dave Barr he kept the lead in the next day's play and now looks set to take the title for Canada.
