  • Description

The United Nations Security Council voted on Monday night (28 February) to stiffen enforcement of sanctions against Rhodesia. The United Kingdom and the United Sates abstained in the voting for the resolution which was passed by 13 votes to none, with two abstentions.

The Council's debate took place against the background of reports that an Argentine freighter was bringing 25,000 tons of Rhodesian chrome are to the United States from Beira, in Portuguese Mozambique. Argentine Ambassador Carlos Ortiz de Romans told the Council that if this proved true, his Government would inflict heavy penalties on the shipping company.

After the resolution had been officially passed, the United Kingdom delegate, Kenneth Jamieson, said his county had abstained in the vote because it did not believe any new resolution on Rhodesia was at present necessary.
