  • Description

The full moon and lunar eclipse is the occasion for a million Hindus to congregate on the banks of the Ganges, holy river of India, at Garh Mukteshwar, to take part in the rites of a bathing festival.

The riverside for miles in swarming with pilgrims taking their ease and paddling and bathing in the holy waters. The popular belief has it that by immersing oneself in the Ganges waters one is cleansed of sin and assured a place in heaven.

Occasions like these are, of course, seized on by beggars, fake sadhus and phoney Brahmins to make some illicit cash while the going's good.

Holy cows and bulls receive favoured treatment and are given a bathe in the river. It is open to all and free for all. Children do not escape but are given a thorough dowsing by their parents.

Open air kitchens produce their characteristic odours everywhere; while pilgrims arrive by all manner of means from homes many miles away.
