  • Description

The European Judo Championships were held in Rotterdam on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November.

Eleven European countries sent their leading exponents of judoka to compete for nine different countries - 125 competitors in all.

The bouts ranged over titles for lightweight, medium weight, and heavy weight; first, second, third & fourth dan and team championship.

The star of the two days' events was the Dutchman, Anton Goesink -- he became European Champion in all categories.

England came first in the Championship team events.

Anton Goesink had relatively little opposition to become champion of the 4th. dan; his opponents - both French - withdrew from the contest. One, Picard, was hurt; the other, Henri Courtine surrendered without a fight.

All the contests were referred by highly-qualified Japanese. The mat on which the bouts were fought is considered to be the largest in Europe - 12 x 24 metres - large enough to accommodate, if need be, three simultaneous matches.
