THE "TUC" AS IT'S KNOW IN BRITAIN IS A PERMANENT ASSOCIATION OF TRADE UNIONS. IT HOLDS AN ANNUAL CONGRESS AT WHICH UNION REPRESENTATIVES EXPRESS TRADE UNION OPINION ON MATTERS OF COMMON CONCERN. IT IS ALSO THE COLLECTIVE SPOKESMAN FOR ORGANISED WORKERS IN BRITAIN. TOTAL AFFILIATION IS NEARLY NINE MILLION PEOPLE FROM ABOUT 170 UNIONS.

PART OF THE SATURDAY CELEBRATIONS WAS A CARNIVAL PROCESSION AND PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF MANCHESTER. AMONG THE SPECTATORS WAS THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON. HE TOLD THEM THAT THE TUC ENTERED ITS SECOND CENTURY AT A TIME WHEN THE PROGRESS OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN BRITAIN HAD NEVER BEEN MORE RAPID. HE PRAISED WHAT HE TERMED THE TUC'S HISTORIC DECISION 15 MONTHS AGO TO ACCEPT THE NEED OF AN INCOMES POLICY RELATING PLANNED GROWTH OF WAGES TO INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY.

THE OLD MASTERS AND MEN MENTALITY HAD GONE AND THE UNIONS NOW PARTICIPATED AT ALL LEVELS SHAPING BRITAIN'S INDUSTRY, SAID MR. WILSON.

AMONG THE 50 FLOATS IN THE PROCESSION SHOWING TRADE UNIONS HISTORY WERE THOSE REPRESENTING THE RAILWAYMEN; FIREMEN; TEXTILE WORKERS; PRINTERS; PLUMBERS; AND THE POST OFFICE ENGINEERING WORKERS.
