Background: TEN THOUSAND TROOPS OF THE EIGHT-NATION SOUTH-EAST ASIA TREATY ORGANISATION PARADED IN BANGKOK, THE THAI CAPITAL, ON JUNE 24 WITH TANKS AND HEAVY ARMS, INCLUDING THE "LITTLE JOHN" MISSILE WHICH CAN CARRY AN ATOMIC WARHEAD.

ABOUT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND THAIS WATCHED THE BIG PARADE, HELD AMIDST REPORTS OF CONTINUED FIGHTING IN THE NEIGHBOURING KINGDOM OF LAOS.

UNITED STATES, BRITISH, AUSTRALIAN, NEW ZEALAND, PHILIPPINE AND THAI TROOPS DROVE PAST ON LORRIES AND JEEPS TOWING HEAVY ARTILLERY AND ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS.

KING BHUMIPOL ADULYADEJ OF THAILAND ACCOMPANIED BY HIGH RANKING OFFICERS OF THE SEATO PARTICIPATING FORCES AND GENERAL CHITTI NAVISATHIEN, DIRECTOR OF THE EXERCISE, REVIEWED THE TROOPS, WHO HAVE JUST COMPLETED NINE DAYS OF WAR MANOEUVRES IN THE RUGGED MONSOON DRENCHED TERRAIN OF NORTHERN THAILAND.

THE MANOEUVRES WERE THE BIGGEST OF THEIR KIND EVER HELD IN THAILAND AND RANGED OVER HALF OF THE COUNTRY.

SPEAKING BEFORE THE TROOPS, THE KING SAID: "DURING THE EXERCISE, I PAID VISITS TO ALL OF YOU AND HAVE SEEN THE EXERCISE IN OPERATION. I HAVE OBSERVED THE STRENGTH AND THE SPEED OF YOUR EFFORTS."
"THE EXERCISE WAS AIMED AS A TEST OF THE STRENGTH AND THE CAPABILITY OF THE VARIOUS UNITS INVOLVED. MISTAKES MADE DURING THE EXERCISE WILL BE RECTIFIED. AND FURTHERMORE, THE EXERCISE ENABLED FOREIGN TROOPS TO BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH THE TERRAIN AND THE CLIMATE."
SOME TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND TROOPS, MAINLY THAIS, TOOK PART IN THE RECENT SEATO EXERCISE.
