    The Armed Forces of Nationalist China staged one of the biggest military exercises in Central and Southern Formosa to test the ability of the Forces now being trained in preparation for launching a counter offensive against the Chinese Mainland.

    President Chiang Kai Shek was present at the joint exercise is which 50,000 soldiers, 10,000 mariners and nearly 300 planes took part.

    The exercise code-named 'Hsiang Yang', featured surface firing, shore bombardment, fuelling at sea, assault landing, bombing and strafing by Sabre jets.

    Among high ranking personalities who watched the exercise were Chinese Defense Minister Yu Ta Wei, United States Generals, and Military Advisers.
