Background: On his way back from addressing the United Nations, Cypriot leader, President Makarios stopped in Athens on Sunday (12 October) for talks on the Cyprus situation with Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis.

The Archbishop is understood to have told Mr. Karamanlis that in recent months between 10,000 and 15,000 Turks have been resettled on Cyprus many of them coming from Britain, Australia and Canada as well as Turkey. Several hundred Pakistanis are also understood to have gone to live on the island.

It's believed that Turkey intends getting another 30,000 people to emigrate to Cyprus. If this happens it will alter the racial balance on the island and give the Turkish side a stronger hand in bargaining over an eventual political settlement.

Premier Karamanlis, who had returned from London the previous day after talks with British leaders on the Cyprus issue, briefed Archbishop Makarios on his visit to the United Kingdom.

Authoritative sources said later that after the meeting the Greek Government and Archbishop Makarios were agreed on the future handling of the Cyprus issue.

During the stopover Archbishop Makarios also met Greek President Tsatsos and opposition leader Mr. George Mavros. He flew home to Cyprus later the same day.
