  • Description

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE RAMPAGED THROUGH THE STREETS OF GIBRALTAR YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), SMASHING BUILDINGS, OVERTURNING VEHICLES AND FIGHTING WITH POLICE. THE MOB'S ANGER WAS DIRECTED AT A GROUP OF SIX PROMINENT GIBRALTARIANS - CALLING THEMSELVES THE "DOVES" - WHO EARLIER IN THE WEEK HAD CALLED FOR A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT OF THE GIBRALTAR PROBLEM BETWEEN THE BRITISH AND SPANISH GOVERNMENTS.

PEOPLE RAN DOWN THE MAIN STREET OF THE COLONY AND SMASHED THEIR WAY INTO A RESTAURANT AND SHOPS OWNED BY SOME OF THE "DOVES". LATER THEY WENT TO THE HARBOUR AND SET FIRE TO A LAUNCH BELONGING TO ONE OF THE PRO-NEGOTIATORS. THINGS GOT OUT OF HAND AS RIOTERS OVERTURNED TRUCKS AND A BUS. ABOUT 20 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AND 15 POLICEMEN WERE INJURED. EVENTUALLY POLICE USED TEARGAS TO DISPERSE THE MOB. AT ONE STAGE, THE CHIEF MINISTER OF GIBRALTAR, SIR JOSHUA HASSAN, AND FIVE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WENT TO THE BALCONY OF THE CITY COUNCIL BUILDING AND APPEALED TO THE PEOPLE TO DISPERSE.

THE SO-CALLED DOVES, IN AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR, REVEALED THAT THEY HAD HELD SECRET NEGOTIATIONS IN MADRID WITH THE SPANISH FOREIGN MINISTER. THEY CALLED FOR A "CONTEMPORARY" ANGLO-SPANISH TREATY TO REPLACE THE "OUTMODED" TREATY OF UTRECHT SIGNED IN 1713, UNDER WHICH SPAIN CEDED GIBRALTAR TO THE BRITISH. THE DOVES WANT GIBRALTAR TO REMAIN BRITISH BUT WITH A STIPULATION THAT THE SPANISH FLAG BE ALLOWED TO FLY ALONGSIDE THE UNION JACK.
