  • Description

The Jordanian capital of Amman was reported quiet today (November 9) as the deadline for the Palestine guerrillas to settle their affairs ran out. Armed guerrillas and Government troops patrolled the city but there were no incidents.

There were fears that renewed fighting between the Government forces and the commandos might result when the deadline ended. However, no incidents were reported.

The deadline was set on October 24 by Brigadier Ahmed Hilmi Abdel-Hamid, the Egyptian Chairman of the Higher Arab Joint Military Committee. On October 22 the Jordanian Government and the guerrillas signed an agreement. Under this protocol the central committees of the Palestine Liberation Organisation is to open a number of offices in Amman, said to be 13, to be guarded by members of the Palestine Liberation Army and the Palestine Armed Struggle Command.

During the two week interval the P.L.O. has presumably opened the office and issued identity cards to its commandos and militiamen, who are supposed to be unarmed in Amman and other towns unless on official missions. The militiamen can keep arms at their homes, while the commandos who guard the P.L.O. offices have the right to remain armed while on duty.
