  • Description

The newest Formula One racing car -- it will take part in the 1974 World Championship -- was unveiled in London on Monday (11 February).

The car was designed by an Australian, Ralph Bellamy, for the John Plays Group. It will be extensively tested in the U.K. during the next month, and will compete for the first time in March, in the "Race of Champions" at Brande Hatch.

Two drivers have been chosen to introduce the new car to the driving circuit. They're Ronnie Peterson, from Sweden, and the Belgian driver, Jackie Ickx.

According to Bellamy, who is interviewed in this film by Visnews reports Neil Mallard, one of the car's most important new features is a hand control for the clutch. The clutch is incorporated in the gear lever nob, leaving only two foot pedals to be used by the driver ... the brake and throttle.

Bellamy hopes that new construction methods will make the car stronger and lighter. He was previously associated with the McLaren racing group -- for whom he designed a Formula One car -- and with the Australian Brabham motor racing organisation.

The car will make its first Grand Prix appearance in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the South Africa Grand Prix.
