  • Description

The Holy Shroud, which has long been venerated as the shroud in which Christ was wrapped after he was taken from the Cross, was shown on Italian television on Friday (November 23rd). The Pope said it had been shown so that all people could know the fascination of the face and body which are imprinted on the cloth.

Although the catholic Church has never formally declared he shroud to be an authentic religious relic, many Popes have in the pas referred to it as a holy object worthy of veneration. The last time it was shown to the public was in 1933, when a million people flocked to see it. Cardinal Michele Pelligrino, Archbishop of Turin, said it was now being shown on television, because "television is the eye of modern man." The image on the cloth is only readily visible when photographed on film.

In an introduction to the film, the Pope described the image as 'so true, so profound, so human, so divine.'
