  • Description

Turkish newspaper editor Abdi Ipeuci was buried on Sunday (4 February), three days after he had been shot dead in Istanbul. His funeral was attended by two-thousand mourners, including Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Opposition leader Suleyman Demirel.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Ipekci was shot by an unidentified gunman on Thursday (1 February) as he drove home from work. He later died of his wounds in hospital. All Turkish political parties condemned his murder. Mr. Mr. Ipekci was one of Turkey's most respected journalists, having worked on the Istanbul daily newspaper, Milliyet, for twenty-five years.

Mr. Ipekci's death is the latest in a flow of politically-motivated violence, in which over six-hundred people have lost their lives during the past twelve months. Following bloody riots last December, material law was imposed in thirteen provinces. Political observers predict Ecevit could lose his parliamentary majority. Independent members of the national assembly are said to be dissatisfied with his handling of law and order, and may withdraw their support.
