  • Description

Major-General Idi Amin, who seized power in Uganda in a coup eight days ago, went to an Army base near Kampala on Sunday (January 31) to review the armoured troops there and to thank them for their loyalty. The Regiment he was visiting is equipped with four Sherman Tanks and 10 Czech-built armoured personnel carriers. It was the crews of these armoured vehicles--all men of the crack Malire Regiment--who are believed to have been responsible for events which turned the tables in the General's favour in the fighting several days earlier against men loyal to Dr. Obote.
