Italian football team, Lazio of Rome, travelled to the United States to play a return match against the New York Cosmos on Wednesday night (1 June). The two had met previously in Rome on the 24th of March. The game was played in the New York Giants stadium.
SYNOPSIS: Before the game started, the crowd of 25,000 loudly cheered Cosmos' newest member, Franz Beckenbauer, recently signed from West German club Bayern Munich at a cost of two million dollars. His teammate, Pele, formerly of Santos and Brazil, is also a crowd favourite.
The visiting team, playing in light shorts and jerseys, kicked off in the first half, but it was the Cosmos who provided the first entertainment.
First, it was Pele who started the cheering with one of his typical attacking runs. Then Pele and Beckenbauer combined with some good passes before Beckenbauer's delicate chip shot was saved by Lazio goalkeeper, Felice Pulici. Pele, not to be outside, kicked the ball out of Pulici's hands and put it in the net, but the referee disallowed the goal.
Pele was involved in the action which led to Cosmos' first goal. He was fouled just outside the Lazio penalty area.
From the subsequent free kick, Giorgio Chinaglia hit the ball past Pulici to make the score one-nil.
The Italians had equalised within a minute when Rnezo Garlaschelli score following a good pass from Bruno Giordano.
The score remained tied at half-time, and it was only a few minutes into the second half that the home side regained the lead. A free kick was again awarded just outside the Lazio penalty area, and Rildo, a former Brazilian defender and teammate of Pele at Santos, scored with a 20 yard (metre) kick.
Lazio equalised again when Andrea Agostinelli put the ball into the net past Cosmos goalkeeper Shep Messing.
With only 13 minutes of the game left, Lazio defender Guiseppe Wilson clinched victory for the visitors with a marvellous headed goal. The final score....Lazio, three, Cosmos, two.
