  • Description

In Kuala Lumpur on Monday (24 July), Malaysian and Vietnamese leaders held talks on the establishment of a zone of peace, freedom and neutrality in South East Asia. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Mr Hussein Onn, met the visiting Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Phan Hien, who was on a South East Asian tour.

SYNOPSIS: The talks were held at the home of Mr. Hussein in Kuala Lumpur. During their ninety minute meeting, Mr. Phan Hien briefed the Malaysian Prime Minister on Vietnam's South East Asian policy which, he said, is aimed at establishing friendship and co-operation with neighbouring countries.

Mr. Phan Hien said that both Vietnam and the Association of South East Asian Nations -- or ASEAN -- want a zone of peace established in the region. Any differences of opinion between Vietnam and ASEAN were not fundamental, and could be reduced by negotiations.

Mr. Phan Hien said Vietnam is now prepared to hold discussions with all ASEAN member states.
