    ISRAEL CLAIMED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO HAVE SUNK TWO EGYPTIAN TORPEDO BOATS IN A NAVAL ENGAGEMENT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA OFF SINAI. AN ISRAELI MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THE BRIEF BATTLE TOOK PLACE ON TUESDAY NIGHT WHEN THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC VESSELS FIRED ON AN ISRAELI NAVAL PATROL.

    THE ISRAELI VESSELS, THE DESTROYER ELATH AND A TORPEDO BOAT, WERE ON WHAT THE SPOKESMAN CALLED A "ROUTINE PATROL IN SINAI WATERS".

    HE SAID THE NAVAL BATTLE BEGAN WHEN THE EGYPTIAN CRAFT OPENED UP WITH THEIR CANONS. ONE OF THE EGYPTIAN TORPEDO BOATS WAS SUNK BY THE ISRAELI TORPEDO BOAT, WHILE THE OTHER WAS SET ABLAZE AND SUNK BY THE DESTROYER ELATH.

    THE MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT EIGHT ISRAELI SEAMEN WERE INJURED, MOST OF THEM SLIGHTLY.

    THE INJURED WERE TAKEN ASHORE AT PORT ASHDOD IN ISRAEL WHERE THE DESTROYER AND TORPEDO BOAT BERTHED EARLY YESTERDAY.
