  • Description

American Eagle and Constellation -- both built this year -- easily beat their older counterparts Tuesday (9 June) in the opening of the first series of trial races for 12-meter yachts that will lead to the choice of an America's Cup defender.

In light and unsteady airs, American Eagle finished a quarter-mile ahead of Nefertiti. And Constellation dropped her opponent Columbia, hull down by more than a half-mile.

The time interludes were three minutes one second for Eagle and seven minutes 13 seconds for Constellation.

There was little doubt about the outcome. The new yachts were well ahead by the time they finished the six and one-half miles they sailed to the windward at the beginning of the race.

Both winners not only had their advantage secured at that point, but added to their margins as they finished the 19 and one-half miles of sailing.

The second race of the round-robin was to pit Constellation against Eagle and Columbia against Nefertiti.
