  • Description

THE 262 INHABITANTS OF TRISTAN DA CUNHA - THE BRITISH DEPENDENCY IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC WHICH WAS MADE UNINHABITABLE BY VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS - ARRIVED IN SOUTHAMPTON, NOV 3, TWENTY-FIVE DAYS AFTER LEAVING THEIR ISLAND HOME FOREVER.

THEY REACHED SOUTHAMPTON ABOARD THE LINER "STIRLING CASTLE" FROM CAPETOWN, WHERE A DUTCH SHIP HAD BROUGHT THEM FROM THEIR TEMPORARY REFUGE ON NIGHTINGALE ISLAND. THEY LEFT BEHIND THEM SOME VEGETABLE PLOTS AND LIVESTOCK, A CANNING FACTORY AND A SMALL FISHING TRADE - BEFORE THEM THERE IS A BEWILDERING FUTURE IN A COUNTRY THAT PRESENTS TO MOST OF THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME THE WHOLE GAMUT OF MODERN CIVILISATION. ONLY SIX OF THEM HAD EVER PREVIOUSLY LEFT THE ISLAND WHERE LIFE HAS STOOD STILL FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS.

FIRST TO GREET THE ISLANDERS IN BRITAIN WAS THE MAYOR OF SOUTHAMPTON, A CHARMING LADY WHO WENT ABOARD THE LINER TO WELCOME EVERYONE - FROM 85 YEAR-OLD GRANNIE HJANE LAVARELLO TO FOUR-WEEK-OLD MARGARET GREEN, WHO WAS BORN ONLY A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE DISASTER. IT WAS EASY ENOUGH TO LEARN THE NAMES OF THE ISLANDERS - THEY HAVE ONLY SEVEN SURNAMES BETWEEN THEM. THEIR HEADMAN IS ONE WILLIE REPETTO, AND THEY SPEAK A VICTORIAN COCKNEY ENGLISH.

FROM SOUTHAMPTON TO ISLANDERS WERE TAKEN BY BUS TO A FORMER ARMY CAMP NEAR MERSTHAM IN SURREY, WHERE MEMBERS OF THE RED CROSS AND THE WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SERVICE WERE AT HAND TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR MOST IMMEDIATE PROBLEMS. THEN IT WAS MEAL-TIME - AND TIME TO FACE PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS AND REPORTERS.

ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BY MINISTRIES AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO PROVIDE THE ISLANDERS WITH ALL THE NECESSARY ESSENTIALS. THEY WILL LIVE AT THE CAMP FOR THE TIME BEING, AND NO DECISION ON THEIR FUTURE WILL BE TAKEN UNTIL IT HAS BEEN POSSIBLE TO CONSULT THEM ON THEIR WISHES. MEANWHILE, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS ACCEPTING THE FINANCIAL LIABILITY OF MAINTAINING THEM. SIR IRVING GANE, CHAMBERLAIN OF THE CITY OF LONDON, HAS REOPENED THE TRISTAN DE CUNHA FUND, ORIGINALLY LAUNCHED IN 1926.
