  • Description

A BIG CROWD OF OVER 15,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED AN ELECTION MEETING HELD BY OGINGA ODINGA, LEADER OF THE NEWLY-FORMED KENYA PEOPLE'S UNION (KPU), IN MAKADARA, NAIROBI, ON MONDAY. ON THE FOLLOWING EVENING, AT THE SAME SITE, AN ELECTION MEETING HELD BY TOM MBOYA, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (KANU), ATTRACTED A CROWD OF 1,000 PEOPLE.

THE TWO POLITICAL MEETINGS FORMED PART OF THE BUILD-UP TOWARDS THIS MONTHS' ELECTIONS IN 26 CONSTITUENCIES BETWEEN OFFICIAL KANU CANDIDATES AND OPPONENTS LARGELY SUPPORTING MR. ODINGA AND SOME OF HIS SUPPORTERS AFTER THEY RESIGNED FROM KANU. THEY LOST THEIR SEATS UNDER A NEW LAW WHICH MAKES IT NECESSARY FOR ANY MEMBER TO SEEK RE-ELECTION IF HE LEAVES THE PARTY UNDER WHOSE AUSPICES HE WAS ELECTED.

THE FORTHCOMING ELECTION CLASH BETWEEN KANU AND KPU CANDIDATES HAS BECOME KNOWN AS THE "LITTLE GENERAL ELECTION."
MR ODINGA, FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF KENYA, TOLD HIS LARGE AUDIENCE THAT THE KPU DID NOT INTEND TO BE INTIMIDATED BY THE "USELESS PROPAGANDA" ON WHICH THE MASSES WERE BEING FED BY KANU. MR MBOYA, MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT, HAD HELD AN EARLIER MEETING IN THE AFTERNOON ON THE SAME SITE.
