The winner of the U.S. Open Jimmy Connors serves to the French Open and Wimbledon winner Bjorn Borg. But Connors has a history of losing to Borg in this tournament, and here in the first set the Swedish champion quickly took control. He broke Connors' serve in the third game after Connors had squandered two break points on Borg's serve in an earlier game. Borg takes the first set 6-2.
After his handsome win in the first, Borg went on in the same style, outsteadying Connors from the baseline and repeatedly blistering his 26-year old opponent with forehand passing shots nearly every time Connors ventured to the net. The match ended with yet another of Borg's down-the-line passing shots winners, to make the score 6-2, 6-3.
