  • Description

In Buenos Aires on Tuesday (March 28), Argentine police continued their search for kidnapped Fiat car company executive Oberdan Sallustro while the midnight deadline for his execution came closer.

This time, the deadline went without incident...his kidnappers, demanding cash and employment reforms from his company in the Argentine capital, had extended it.

Signor Sallustro, an Italian director of Fiat's Argentine subsidiary Fiat-Concord, was kidnapped a week earlier (Tuesday, March 21) by members of the Peoples Revolutionary Army-an underground Marxist movement. The kidnappers demanded on million dollars (U.S.- about GBP385,000 sterling) worth of supplies for schoolchildren; the release of fifty jailed members of their movement; and the reinstatement of 250 Fiat workers dismissed after disturbances last year. Fiat-Concord said it was willing to meet its part of the ransom, but the Argentine Government said it could not allow Fiat to negotiate with the P.R.A.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina, Tuesday....and crowds gather around the wife of Signor Oberdan Sallustro, the Italian executive of the local Fiat car company who was kidnapped by members of an underground Marxist organisation a week earlier. It was only hours before the expiry of the kidnappers' deadline for their ransom demands to be met. The deadline.....midnight. The penalty....death. The ransom....one million dollars worth of school equipment for children; the reinstatement of 250 sacked Fiat workers; and the release of fifty Marxist prisoners. Signor Sallustro's wife and their son--seen here--later made a dramatic plea for his life.

As deadline midnight approached, police made sweeping searches of cars and houses while the Government refused to allow Fiat to meet their part of the ransom....but the kidnappers didn't carry out the execution. They extended the deadline.....
