Background: Cameroon President Ahmadou Ahidjo on Friday (14 December) opened the ninth General Assembly of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) in Yaounde. Delegates from 46 African states attended the conference which was dominated by debates on a draft resolution recommending that African states boycott sporting events involving Britain.

SYNOPSIS: Yaounde's National Assembly building provided the venue for the SCSA conference, ceremoniously opened by President Ahidjo and eagerly observed by the international sporting community because of fears that Africa may boycott next year's Olympics in Moscow. The Council's Executive Committee had tabled a motion echoing Africa's decision to withdraw from the Montreal Olympics in 1976 because New Zealand had spent a rugby Union team to south Africa that years. This year Britain received the South African Barbarians and that -- the draft resolution said -- was in breach of the Glkeneagles Agreement which calls on Commonwealth leaders to discourage sporting exchange with racist regimes.

In the event, one leading delegate said that was not enough for a boycott and President Ahidjo in his opening speech said that sport should not divide nations.
