  • Description

Football enthusiasts in Niamey, capital of Niger, experienced keen disappointment on Sunday (29 February) when their armed forces team was decisively beaten two-nil by the Upper Volta military eleven in a friendly match.

Sports commentators in Niamey were quite confident that the Niger team would be able to take an easy win. But this proved to be wishful thinking - with Upper Volta asserting their superiority with a goal in the eighth minute.

Thereafter the Niger players attempted to redress the balance of play - but their tactical manoeuvres were unsuccessful and the Upper Volta defence held them at bay.

As far as the Niger defence line was concerned, only Amadou Issa played well. The Niger player, Kimba, who usually performs with great skill, was not on form and several times, when presented with a chance for the Volta goal, kicked wide.

In the 52nd minute of play the Upper Volta soldiers took advantage of a hole in the Niger defence and their player Thomas scored their second goal.
