  • Description

Papua New Guinea's Chief Minister Michael Somare and the Australian Attorney-General Kep Enderby on Saturday (9 August) jointly opened a now cultural centre in the township of Maprik, in the East Sepik district of the island territory.

Mr. Enderby's visit to Papua New Guinea was the last planned by an Australian government minister before the territory achieves full independence on 16 September. He and his staff have been discussing and a range of political topics with Mr. Somare and other Papua New Guinea leaders.

The Maprik Cultural Centre is designed to encourage the spread of traditional island culture ... which suffered great repression at the hands of early colonist and missionaries.

Mr. Somare -- the island's Chief Minister since self-government was granted in December 1973 and the Papua New Guinea Assembly representative for the East Sepik district -- has been instrumental in pressing for a full resurgence of local art forms and customs throughout the territory.

During the last financial year, the Australian Government pledged to grant the Papua New Guinea Government 5 million Australian dollars (6.6 million U.S. dollars) in cultural aid over a five-year period.
