Background: June 6 marks the fifth anniversary of the first Eurovision exchange of television programmes between 16 television services in 12 European countries. VISNEWS recently filmed "behind the scenes" of this unique service.
Hub of this complex system is located in the dome of Brussels 'Palais de Justice'. The 'brain' is a perfect example of European co-operation. Technical Director Eric Griffith of Great Britain operates the whole mechanism enabling pictures sent from Stockholm to reach Rome within a few seconds. Dutchman Karl Enkelaar is the News Co-ordinator, assisted by Franco Schepis (Italy) and Van Uitven(Belgium).
Newsfilm items happening in the participating countries are "bounced" along the international link to the Brussels disseminating centre. There they are "cleaned up" and retransmitted simultaneously over the network so that viewers in Hamburg, Paris, London, Geneva, Rome, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Brussels, may sit comfortably in their sitting rooms watching through their "window on Europe".
