  • Description

The Midtown Department store on Union Square, formerly Orbachs, had its Washington Birthday Sale this year as every year. The store offered impossible bargains too numerous to mention: dresses for a dollar, expensive English racing bicycles for five dollars, underwear for a few cents. It was pretty hard to resist. The crowds of bargain hunters turned out early ready to rough their way through formidable police lines to reach such promising bargain counters. They pushed. And the police pushed back. They continued to push. And the police lines held.

(HOLD TO PHOTOGRAPHER IN BROKEN WINDOW)
There were no reports of broken arms or legs but a plate glass window succumbed to the pressure of bargain-hunters who had no intention of waiting their turns when they could get it for better than wholesale. Patience, shoving, persistence sometimes won out. Here goes a fifty dollar bicycle bought with a five dollar bill
