French Cabinet Ministers met for one of their regular sessions at the Elysee Palace in Paris, Jan 18, to hear a report by M. Joxe, Minister of State for Algerian Affairs, who recently visited the North African territory.
The Council of Ministers, having conferred with General de Gaulle, also referred to a declaration by the "Algerian Provisional Government" in Tunis, who stated on Jan 16 that they have were ready to negotiate the conditions for a free consultation of the Algerian people. The French Cabinet said note had been taken of the more favourable attitude apparently adopted towards peaceful exchanges by the "external organisation" of the Algerian rebels. M. Terrenoire, the Minister of Information, declined to elaborate on this statement.
There are persistent reports that semi-official approaches have been made to members of the "Provisional Government", which has now dispersed after its recent discussions in Tunis. Its leader, Ferhat Abbas, has set out on a visit to Indonesia after indicating that he would be ready to return at once for a meeting with General de Gaulle.
