    TOKYO'S EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR OPENED ON THURSDAY (17 APRIL) AT THE CITY'S HARUMI FAIRGROUND.

    TWENTY-TWO COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR'S FAIR.

    THE FAIR RUNS UNTIL MAY 6TH. THE FIRST TEN DAYS WILL ONLY BE FOR TRADE BUYERS, BUT FOR THE LAST TEN DAYS, THE PUBLIC TOO CAN ENJOY THE EXHIBITS.

    TWO-THOUSAND THREE-HUNDRED COMPANIES ARE DISPLAYING THEIR GOODS THIS YEAR. EVERYTHING FROM DAILY NECESSITIES LIKE FOOD TO HEAVY DUTY VEHICLES AND CONSTRUCTION PLANT WILL BE ON SHOW.

    BUT THERE IS PLENTY TO INTEREST THE NON-TECHNICAL VISITOR. ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ITEMS IS LIKELY TO BE A FULL-SIZE MOCK-UP OF THE NOSE SECTION OF THE BOEING 747 'JUMBO JET', WHICH GOES INTO SERVICE NEXT YEAR.

    TRADE FAIR OFFICIALS SAY A LARGE NUMBER OF FOREIGN BUYERS AND TRADE MISSIONS ARE EXPECTED TO VISIT THE FAIR. THEY ARE CONFIDENT THAT DEALS WORTH AT LEAST 20 BILLION YEN (2 BILLION POUNDS STERLING) WILL BE MADE DURING THE PERIOD OF THE FAIR IN THE IMPORT AND EXPORT OF GOODS.
