  • Description

Portuguese Prime Minister Mario Soares has rebuked dissenters in his Socialist Party and has called for unity behind his minority government's policy of "national survival".

SYNOPSIS: Speaking to about 1,200 delegates at the Portuguese Socialist Party Congress which opened in Lisbon on Saturday (30 October), Dr. Soares said that a recent "war of communiques" between the left and right wings of his party was threatening to deprive the socialists of everything they had won. He added that the party must support the whole government and not just certain individual ministers.

Before the serious business of the Congress started Dr. Soares was joined by party president Antonio Macedo, to lead the delegates in song.

Later he warned that to continue forcing the pace of the revolution would dangerously reduce its support.

Dr. Soares also attacked the communist party for the methods it has used in efforts to gain power, accusing last year's procommunist government of trying to destroy the economy. At the Socialist Party's first Congress Dr. Soares said that it was of Marxist inspiration. He omitted this on Saturday.
