  • Description

A NEW WORLD RECORD IN THE WOMEN'S 4 X 100 METRES MEDLEY RELAY WAS SET UP BY A DUTCH TEAM SWIMMING IN AN INTERNATIONAL CONTEST AGAINST BRITAIN AT GRONINGEN, IN HOLLAND, ON SATURDAY.

THE DUTCH SWIMMERS WERE IN EXCELLENT FORM. THEY BEAT THE WORLD RECORD OF 4 MINUTES 40.1 SECONDS SET UP BY THE EAST GERMANS IN 1962, BY ONE SECOND.

MISS RIA VAN VELSEN OPENED WITH 100 METRES BACKSTROKE IN 1 MINUTE 12.2 SECONDS. THEN MISS KLENIE BIMOLT COVERED THE BREASTSTROKE IN ONE MINUTE 18 SECONDS. MISS ADA KOK PUT IN A POWERFUL EFFORT AT BUTTERFLY TO COVER THE 100 METRES IN ONE MINUTE 5.4 SECONDS. THE FINAL TWO LENGTHS OF CRAWL (SHOWN ON FILM) WERE COMPLETED BY MISS ERICA TERPSTRA IN ONE MINUTE 3.5 SECONDS TO CLINCH THEIR VICTORY AND THE NEW RECORD.

MISS TERPSTRA, A PHYSICAL TRAINING INSTRUCTRESS HELD HER LEAD OF SEVEN OR EIGHT YARDS THROUGHOUT THE FINAL TWO LENGTHS. MISS SANDRA KEEN, SWIMMING FOR BRITAIN, FOUGHT HARD TO CLOSE THE GAP, BUT SHE COULD NOT CATCH THE DUTCH GIRL.

THE OVERALL RESULT OF THE TWO-DAY MATCH WAS A DUTCH VICTORY 140-100. IN MAY, THE DUTCH TEAM WAS BEATEN BY THE BRITISH SWIMMERS BY TWELVE POINTS AT A CONTEST IN BLACKPOOL, U.K.
