  • Description

British Broadcasting Corporation's GBP12-million Television Centre at White City, London, will come into use in a few weeks - 4 years after building began, and a new, expansive age for British television - competing in foreign markets with American programmes - is hopefully predicted.

Covering 3 1/2 acres and shaped like a giant question mark, the Television Centre is super-modern to the last detail; its seven studios have equipment for recording programmes on tape ready for transmitting on any television system anywhere. In the studios, the largest and heaviest of scenery can be set up, or a full-size 7-foot deep "lake" can be formed.

Workshops will produce any type of decor required, massive 70-foot backcloths peel up on rollers from slits in the floor. The master control room can bring in Television pictures from the European continent at a touch.

The White City Centre could become to Television what Hollywood is to cinema; it is up to British producers, writers, and artists to make full use of superb facilities now made available.
