  • Description

Six people were injured, one of them seriously, when security troops opened fire during a wild demonstration by anti-communist journalists and their supporters in Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday (4 September).

The trouble started when the demonstrators tried to storm the communist-controlled Diario De Noticias newspaper.

The injured were hit by flying glass from windows shattered when the troops fired into the air with automatic rifles to try and prevent them from getting inside the building.

About a thousand people were involved in the incident which came after a lout but peaceful demonstration by 3,000 journalists and supporters.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Lisbon chanting slogans like "Diario De Noticias is the people's not Moscow's." The demonstration was sparked off when 24 non-communist journalists were sacked from the newspaper.

The march climaxed at the newspaper building which was guarded by five armoured oars and troops from the Copcon Security Force. There were no incidents until night fell. By then most of the protesters had dispersed.

However, while the paper was ringed by the yelling anticommunists, the workers inside were in a state of seige and fears were held for their safety.

Informed sources say the paper will not be published for a couple of days.
