    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA

The solemnity of the 112th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi was marked by the presence of president Reddy arriving for prayers at the memorial to Gandhi outside New Delhi.

SYNOPSIS: People began to arrive early in the morning to take part in prayers at the memorial. The site marks where Gandhi was cremated.

President Reddy led members of Mrs. Indira Gandhi's cabinet to the memorial where he laid flowers. Gandhi's importance to India is not just as leader of the independence movement to get the British out, but also as a great religious thinker and philosopher. He wrote in his autobiography that he had been striving for thirty years to see God face to face.

Hundreds of people joined in the prayers conducted around the memorial.

Morning service was conducted there were reading from the Gitta, the holy Book. The Gitta became what Gandhi called his spiritual dictionary and probably the most major of all influence on his life. Other influence on his life included Christianity and the writings of the Russian Leo Tolstoy.

The eternal flame that burns at the Gandhi memorial signifies the place Gandhi has in the lives of Indians. His philosophy of non-violence made a massive impact on not just India but the world. His struggle by means of non-cooperation led to a unity of the Hindu and Moslems. His struggle of fasting and non-violent opposition carried on through the thirties and forties until India's independence was finally achieved. Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948.
