Background: Pope Paul wound up his tumultuous trip to the United States last night with a quick trip to the Vatican Pavilion at the New York World's Fair before departing by jet airliner for Rome.

The principal highlight of the Pope's trip to the fair was a viewing of Michelangelo's sculpture, the Pieta. Ordinarily, this reposes in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Besides looking at the statue, the Pope blessed the crowds in the pavilion. He said: " We bless all of you, invoking upon you an abundance of Heavenly blessing and grace.

Then, he left in a motorcade or Kennedy International Airport where he said his goodbye and boarding a Trans World Airlines jet for the trip to Rome. Thus, he arrived on an Italian airliner and departed on an American one. Despite the rigors of his crowded schedule, the Pope was on time for most of his engagements and ended his whirlwind trip virtually at the time planned.
