  • Description

IN BERLIN LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) MORE THAN 5-THOUSAND PEOPLE, LED BY THE GOVERNING MAYOR OF THE CITY, HERR KLAUS SCHUETZ, TOOK PART IN A SILENT MARCH THROUGH THE CITY IN PROTEST AGAINST THE ENTRY OF SOVIET AND OTHER WARSAW PACT TROOPS INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

THE MARCH WAS HELD FROM THE CITY CENTRE TO THE WEST BERLIN CITY HALL. TORCH-BEARERS LINED THE ROUTE OF THE MARCH.

HERR SCHUETZ, SPEAKING TO THE RALLY, URGED THE CZECH PEOPLE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE GERMAN PEOPLE AND THOSE WHO NOW OCCUPIED THEIR COUNTRY FOR A SECOND TIME.

THE MOVEMENT OF TROOPS INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA, HE SAID, SHOULD BE A LESSON TO THOSE WHO SUGGESTED WEST BERLIN SHOULD LOOK FOR NEW GUARANTEES IN THE EAST. WEST BERLIN WOULD REMAIN IN THE WEST AND STAY LINKED TO WEST GERMANY.

IN BONN, HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE SOVIET EMBASSY FOR SEVERAL HOURS. SCORES OF POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO CONTROL THE DEMONSTRATORS. THE DEMONSTRATORS CHANTED PRO-CZECH AND ANTI-SOVIET SLOGANS, AND SOME HURLED PAINT AND DYE, IN THE THREE COLOURS - RED, WHITE AND BLUE - AT A BUILDING.
