  • Description

The Second Pan-African Trade Fair has opened in the Algerian capital, Algiers, in conjunction with The 13th annual Algiers International Trade Fair.

SYNOPSIS: The Fair site is across Algiers Bay, and hovercraft are being used to ferry visitors to the site. The Fair was opened by President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria and the Secretary General of the Organisation of African Unity, Mr William Eteki Mboumoua. One of the attractions was the groups of traditional dancers and bands who performed for visitors.

The Pan-African Fair follows the first in 1972 in Nairobi, Kenya, when it was decided to try and create an African common market. Eleven western European nations have exhibits at the fair, and are showing mainly heavy industrial and agricultural equipment. Altogether, 60 countries are taking part in the combined fair - 26 of them member states of the Organisation of African Unity, the OAU.

The Fair opened on Friday (2 October) for two weeks. Its aim is to promote economic co-operation between African countries. It's estimated that at present, little more than two per cent of Africa's trade is done between African countries. While the fair is going on, a symposium is also to be held on African agriculture, industry and trade.

Aspects of African culture are being strongly emphasised at the fair. One unusual stand for a trade fair, because of the politics involved, is that of the Algerian-backed guerrilla group, the Polisario Front. The front is fighting Moroccan and Mauritanian forces in a bid to gain control of former Spanish Sahara.

The Secretary-General of the OAU, Mr. Mboumoua, said the Fair demonstrated the stated will of African countries to have their own economic exchanges free of economic dependence on other countries and former colonisers.
