  • Description

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALIST PARTY WAS CELEBRATED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AT A RALLY AT DE WILDT, OUTSIDE PRETORIA, IN THE TRANSVAAL, ATTENDED BY ABOUT 50,000 PEOPLE.

DR. VERWOERD, THE PRIME MINISTER, ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE, DROVE TO THE RALLY IN A HORSE AND CART TO RE-ENACT AN EVENT IN 1912. IN THIS, THE FOUNDER OF THE PARTY, GENERAL HERTZOG AND HIS WIFE TRAVELLED TO DE WILDT WHERE THE GENERAL MADE HIS "SOUTH AFRICA FIRST" DECLARATION AT A BIG MEETING.

DR. VERWOERD SPOKE AT THE RALLY UNDER THE KAREE TREE THAT SHADED GENERAL HERTZOG DURING HIS HISTORIC DECLARATION. AMONG THOSE AT THE RALLY WERE SOME WHO ATTENDED GENERAL HERTZOG'S MEETING IN 1912.

(IN HIS SPEECH, DR. VERWOERD BROKE THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT'S SILENCE ON THE RHODESIAN CRISIS BY DECLARING THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO OUTSIDE INTEREST IN RHODESIAN AFFAIRS. HE CRITICISED THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT FOR INTERFERING WITH THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT BEFORE PUBLIC OPINION IN RHODESIA HAD BEEN FULLY TESTED IN THE INDEPENDENCE ISSUE.)
