The Dutch football team, Ajax, qualified for their fourth European Cup Final in five seasons on Wednesday night (25 April) when they beat former champions Real Madrid 1-0 to win the two-leg semi-final, 3-1.

Ajax, who have won the European Cup for two years running, will meet the Italian side, Juventus, in the final in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on May 31. Juventus reached the final on a 3-1 aggregate after a goalless draw on Wednesday night (25 April) with the English side, Derby County.

Ajax looked in danger of elimination from this year's cup contest two weeks ago when they could only muster a 2-1 at-home win. On Wednesday night, Real Madrid -- six times European champions -- only needed to score one goal to beat Ajax. However, the Dutch side successfully fought off all their attempts to score, and a goal by Ajax inside-left Gerard Muhren in the eighth minute of the second half was the only goal of the match.

SYNOPSIS: The Dutch football team, Ajax -- wearing red -- kicked off in Wednesday's European Cup semi-final match against Real Madrid in the Spanish capital.

Ajax, who have won the European Cup for two years running, quickly went into the attack. They needed to make their mark early in the game, as Real Madrid only had to score one goal to beat the Dutch side on aggregate. However, despite some very spirited attempts, Real Madrid beat off the Dutch attacks. The first half was played without a goal being scored.

But Real Madrid kept chasing that one elusive goal without success. Ajax had looked in danger of elimination from this year's cup contest two weeks' ago when they could only muster a 2-1 win at home.

Not even the supporting cheers of the 120,000 spectators could enable Real Madrid to score. The Spanish side, six times European soccer champions -- a record -- had certainly met their match in Ajax.

The breakthrough came in the eighteen minute of the second half. Spanish centre-back Gregorio Benito headed a clearance which landed at Ajax inside-left Gerard Muhren's feet. Muhren slammed in a low kick which beat Real Madrid goalie Garcia Remon.

From then on, Real Madrid was up against much bigger odds. But despite several determined attacks, they failed to crack the Ajax defence, and the Dutch side won the match 1-0 to qualify for their fourth European Cup Final in five seasons.
