One of the U.S.S.R.'s top football teams, Locomotive Club, opened a two week tour of India by beating the Delhi Football Association's President's Eleven by two goals to nil on Friday (26 December).
The team is only the third Soviet team to play in New Delhi in the past twenty years. They will play four matches during their Indian tour.
The team has some of the top Soviet footballers in its line-up. Last year it won the Railroad Workers Competition and this year, the Mini-Football contest. It is currently ranked 11th in the top sixteen teams in the U.S.S.R.
The game against the Delhi team was evenly matched until half time when the score was nil-all. But then the Soviet team kept up a strong attack and managed to score two goals.
The Indian goalkeeper was under pressure for much of the second half, but saved several shots.
SYNOPSIS: One of the top football teams in the U.S.S.R., the Locomotive Club, beat the Delhi Football Association's President's Eleven by two goals to nil in New Delhi on Friday. The Soviet team is seen here in striped jerseys and kicking off from left to right. Play was fairly evenly matched in the first half and at half time the score stood at nil-all.
After half time the Soviet team dominated play. They kept up a strong attack throughout the second half and the Delhi goalkeeper was constantly under pressure. It was because of his work that the score was not more in the Soviet team's favour.
For the Indian crowd, it was only the third opportunity they had had in the last twenty years to see a Soviet team play in New Delhi. The Locomotive Club is ranked as eleventh out of sixteen in the top Soviet division. Its tour of India will last two weeks and they'll play four games during that time.
