    AN ANGLO-GREEK CLIMBING TEAM, LED BY SIR JOHN HUNT OF MOUNT EVEREST FAME, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) COMPLETED THE FIRST STAGE IN ITS CROSSING OF THE PINDUS MOUNTAINS, IN CENTRAL GREECE. THE PARTY , WHICH INCLUDES SIR JOHN'S WIFE, ARRIVED AT CARPENISSI AFTER CONQUERING THREE MOUNTAINS - PARNASSUS, GHIONA, AND VARDOUSSIA - RANGING UP TO NINE THOUSAND FEET.

    TREACHEROUS SNOW SLIDES HAVE CAUSED THE CLIMBERS SOME TROUBLE,BUT THEY'RE STILL KEEPING TO SCHEDULE. AND, THROUGHOUT THE JOURNEY, GREEK VILLAGERS ARE TURNING OUT TO GIVE THEM A WARM WELCOME. THE TEAM IS NOW TACKLING THE MAIN PEAKS OF THE PINDUS RANGE, HEADING FOR METSOVON. FINAL DESTINATION, KASTORIA, SHOULD BE REACHED BY APRIL 18TH.

    AMONG OTHERS IN THE GROUP ARE SIR JOHN HUNT'S DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND, NEW ZEALANDER GEORGE DIZLEY, OLYMPIC 3,000 - METRE CHAMPION. THE GREEK CLIMBERS COMPRISE MEMBERS OF THE GREEK ALPINE CLUB AND GREEK ARMY COMMANDOS.
