  • Description

World driving champion Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil beat Britain's James Hunt by six seconds on Sunday (12 January) to win the Argentine Grand Prix and set a scorching pace for the 1975 Formula One Championships.

Only four other drivers finished the full 53 laps of the 5,968-metre (3.7-mile) circuit outside Buenos Aires as the gruelling race, under a sweltering sun, turned into a split-second duel between the reigning champion and the Briton. The lead changed hands three times before Fittipaldi finally inched his McLaren past Hunt's Hesketh on the 35th lap and pulled away to win with a time of one hour 39 minutes 26.29 seconds. The Brazilian's average speed was just under 119 miles (182 kms) an hour.

Hunt took a bad spin on the crucial 35th lap, which he said cost him the race. "It was all going perfect till I spun on a hairpin," he said. "That cost me five seconds".

The local Argentine favourite, Carlos Reutemann--cheered on by the capacity crowd of 100,000-got off to an excellent start, but Hunt overtook his Brabham on the 26th lap, and Reutemann finished third -- 17 seconds behind Fittipaldi and 11 behind Hunt.

Fittipaldi's older brother, Wilson, smashed his new Brazilian-built Copersucar into a barrier on a hairpin turn early in the race, but he escaped unhurt from the blazing wreckage.

Emerson Fittipaldi's victory puts him at the top of the 1975 World Championship table with nine points. Hunt is second with six, and Reutemann third with four.
